FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - There's a new place to chow down in the Summit City.
Food trucks have been a big-city staple for years, but now they're popping up in increasing numbers here too.
On Thursday, a ribbon cutting ceremony took place for Fort Wayne’s newest mobile kitchen Jumby's Joint Food Truck.
"I kind of traveled the country making sure that every sandwich that we did was authentic,” owner Jim “Jumby” Garigen said. “So, our theme is kind of a taste of home."
Food trucks aren't just for big cities anymore.
"I think not only will we be able to sustain it, but the city and Allen County has pretty much accepted the idea, and there will be a couple other trucks launching in the next 30 days," Garigen said.
Customers seem to be pleased with this new mobile kitchen as well.
"I was really excited when he started coming around here, and even more excited to hear that there's going to be more food trucks coming to town," David Whitney said.
"This is just another indicator that people are jazzed about the downtown area and are springing up some good ideas," Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce President Mike Landram said.
The goal of Jumby's Joint Food Truck is to be a local and sustainable business as well as keeping the money here in town.
The menu changes from day to day, but customers are sure to find something they will love, whether it's a burger or fried pickles. There is also no a single item on the menu that is over $6.
According to the board of health, there are currently 47 mobile food service businesses under permit in Allen County. There are a lot of requirements and regulations that have to be met and inspections to pass, but Garigen said that hasn't been his biggest hurdle by far.
"The only problem we're going to have right now is kind of some outdated ordinances as far as parking goes, and the fact that you can only be in a meter for two hours," Garigen said.
Still, plenty of more food trucks like Jumby’s Joint Food Truck will be found in Fort Wayne in the future
