Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - It's official! The new Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge is open for business in downtown Fort Wayne, tonight.
It was a huge lighting ceremony with 1,200 lights on 14,000 feet of electrical wiring, utilizing 50 foot arches. Plaques dot the structure with quotes from Dr. King.
Thanks to grants, the city pays $2 million dollars of the $8.8 million dollar cost.
During the ceremony, the "Voices of Unity" choir performed and guests enjoyed a light show. City leaders joined a nephew of Dr. King's, who is a college professor in Indianapolis, to make the event official.
