FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - The approach of summer's end means dog and cat owners need to be thinking about preventing flea infestations.

Veterinarian Daniel Rodgers says when the weather begins to cool in a few weeks, fleas will look to jump on your pet for warmth, meaning they can then get in your home.

Rodgers urges dog owners to give their pet a heart worm tablet once a month that also kills fleas.

Daniel Rodgers, DVM at Aboite Animal Hospital says, “This actually sterilizes the female flea, she cannot lay any eggs until she first draws up her blood meal, once she does that, she sterilizes herself, the eggs will never hatch out, you don't have a problem then in your home."

Rodgers says for cats, a product called "revolution" treats a variety of threats including fleas.
