FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – People were rallying in downtown Fort Wayne against Monsanto's Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO's).
GMO’s are created when genes from unrelated organisms, such as viruses and bacteria, are inserted into a plant or animal.
Protesters claim Monsanto's RoundUp corn, soy beans and other crops are designed to withstand large quantities of weed killer, making them dangerous to consume.
They say Monsanto’s genetically engineered Bovine growth hormone has come under fire for being linked to the consumption of hormone-tainted animal products that can cause cancer.
“It feels amazing because some of us organizers, we do this a lot, but when somebody hears about somebody messing with their food supply it brings out people that normally this isn't what they do,” said Amanda Kaminskas, protester.
Scientists say GMO’s can be harmful to the environment in number of ways, including an increase in toxic pesticides.
