FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - A new organization is taking on a host of issues impacting the Allen County community, and today Indiana's NewsCenter tagged along as they were taken on a private tour of the courthouse.

The Allen County Republican Women were joined by a few guys and a handful of teenagers as they toured the Allen County Courthouse Thursday. Superior Court Judge Wendy Davis and members of her staff were also on hand to answer questions about how the court system works, the responsibilities of judges, and the building's history.

The tour even included a stop in an area few are able to ever visit. The group walked up several flights of stairs before making it above the building's huge, stained glass dome. A few flights down the group encircled the courthouse's rotunda, peering down at the beautiful architecture below.

For the Republican Women, it was yet another opportunity to get informed and involved. Group Chairwoman Pat Kohart says, "I think one-on-one hearing these candidates and our already elected officials really helps you have an idea on what's going on and what type of people are running our government."

Judge Davis says she enjoys meeting with various community organizations and appreciates the interest they've taken in the courthouse and judicial system.

"Our judicial branch of government is a very important part of government that I think the community may be a little intimidated of or shy away from, but it's important for them to know that it is open to the public," says Judge Davis.

She also reminds citizens that anyone can take a tour of the courthouse if requested. People are also permitted to sit in on any criminal trial as long as they are respectful of the building and court proceedings.
