FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- Science Central, the region’s premier gateway for informal science education, unveiled its new logo with a “big bang” Wednesday in a ceremony held at the popular science center.
Science Central Executive Director Martin Fisher, Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry, Fort Wayne City Councilman Tom Didier, and Science Central Executive Board Chair Karrie Kitch cut the strings to unfurl a banner featuring the new logo as it dropped from the ceiling of Science Central. The banner dropped following a countdown of exploding balloons filled with hydrogen, which were held by the logo’s designer, Todd Lemley, students from Lane Middle School, and Science Central staff.
“We feel this new logo will be instantly recognizable to our community. It shows our visitors we are a fun, educational science center,” said Science Central Executive Director Martin S. Fisher. “The logo is brightly colored, and it is similar to the colored smokestacks on our building that serve as a local landmark. If you look closely, however, you’ll see that they are test tubes, not smokestacks, sending the message that science is our business. We love the dual meaning of the logo!”
The logo was developed by Fort Wayne advertising and marketing firm Boyden & Youngblutt, under the direction of Lisa Wylie, account executive, who also serves on the Science Central Board. “B&Y was thrilled to be chosen for this project,” said Wylie. “Having our business downtown, we're proud to support, and be a part of, all of the wonderful gems that downtown Fort Wayne has to offer. To assist Science Central in a period of such growth and excitement was an honor. We were happy to be able to create a new look and fresh feel to carry the Science Central branding into its next chapter."
Graphic artist Todd Lemley was the designer of the logo. "The new logo is recognizable, strong, colorful and fun. The Science Central building with its multi-colored stacks is a very recognizable Fort Wayne landmark,” Lemley commented. “The design just seemed to develop naturally using the equity that was already there, and building upon it. The test tubes are a great universal science symbol that says discovery and exploration. With the addition of bubbles flowing from the tubes, I was able to create a sense of energy and fun within the overall design. The colors I chose are similar to the existing smokestack colors, but are a little more sophisticated to appeal to a wider audience. I wanted to convey that Science Central is not just for young kids, but a destination for the entire family. There's something for everyone."
“Boyden and Youngblutt gave us many wonderful drafts to choose from,” said Fisher. “This particular design was the overwhelming choice of our staff, Board, community leaders, and most importantly, our visitors.”
Science Central will begin using the logo immediately on its communications to the public, in advertising, on new exhibits, and on uniforms. “We’ll be phasing in the new logo over the next several years,” said Fisher, “so we ask the public to be patient with us as we get new signs, and update everything that needs to be changed. It’s expensive to change a logo, but we think it’s been worth the investment to date, and we look forward to using the logo as we move forward into our next phase of growth and development.”
