INDIANA (www.incnow.tv) -- Early Wednesday the Indiana Department of Workforce Development had reported that effective this Saturday, 32,000 unemployed will lose their federal unemployment benefits courtesy of the sequester (federal budget cuts). Late Wednesday evening the tone of that statement changed to one of uncertainty.
As of Wednesday evening, Workforce Development Commissioner Scott Sanders issued a statement saying that after receiving guidance from the US Department of Labor, unemployment compensation (even benefits that are federally funded) will continue through March 9.
Unemployment benefits are funded federally for weeks 27 to 63. State funded unemployment benefits cover weeks one through 26 and will not be affected by the federal budget cuts. So those past week 26 in their unemployment benefits will lose their benefits altogether.
So for the time being the sequester will not affect unemployment benefits for 32,000 unemployed as previously stated. But what will happen after March 9th is still uncertain.
