FORT WAYNE, In. (www.incnow.tv) --- A man described as having suicidal tendencies has been shot and killed in an exchange of gunfire with Fort Wayne Police in a north side subdivision.

The incident unfolded about 8:20 this morning in the 77-hundred block of Weymouth Court, when police responded to a disturbance involving a man with a semi-automatic handgun inside a residence who was believed to be suicidal.

Police say they have had previous contact with the individual.

According to officials, Initial information indicated that a resident at the home was under the influence of a mind- or mood-altering drug(s), and he was behaving irrationally.

We're told police retreated from the house the man was in when he produced the weapon. He then left the house and got into a car, attempting to flee. Officers say the man tried to run over them as he was fleeing, shooting at police, who returned fire, killing him.

In the exchange, bullets hit nearby homes. No police or other residents were hurt.

Police Chief Rusty York was immediately on the scene when the incident unfolded. The fatal police action shooting today was the second in a week involving city of Fort Wayne Police.
