FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter): Mile after mile drivers saw the flashing lights of police cruisers and the aftermath of car accidents along a slick portion of I-69. Officials described the cars as "pinballs in a pinball machine."
"I've seen a lot of cars off in ditches," said truck driver Clyde Sexton. "People need to slow down."
From just south of Exit 99 to Exit 109, nearly a dozen accidents could be seen along the Hoosier Interstate. The icy weather had INDOT out in force working to prevent even more accidents.
"If we see an accident, we'll just call dispatch for the Sheriff, city or state [police]," said INDOT crew leader Mitchell Means.
Means hit the road at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday and continued plowing until early afternoon. INDOT says the Fort Wayne area had nearly a full fleet working the roads Saturday morning with 37 plows on the highways.
"If we start treating the road, then we have to treat it all night just to keep it from freezing," explained Means.
INDOT officials say even after the streets are cleared, black ice can still form throughout the day. So, the number one piece of advice is drive slow.
Officials say most of the highways were clear by early Saturday afternoon.
