FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - A local soldier makes a surprise visit to his son's school. Specialist Aaron Zehner is home on leave after being away from his family for 9 months.
Tears fell down his face as he hugged his 6 year-old son, 2 year-old daughter and for the first time saw his 1-week-old son Caleb.
"It felt great seeing them again," said Zehner.
Zehner is home in Fort Wayne on a 2 week leave. As far as what he has planned to do, he says that's all up to the kids. His 6-year-old says he is looking forward to spending time with his dad.
"So he can play with me," said Jared.
"I want to do what makes them happy. Anything I can do to make them happy, that's pretty much what my plans are," said Zehner.
It was a special moment for his family, but also a special time many kids at Washington Elementary School also took part in. It would appear it took time to plan, but it was only a few days ago he found out he was coming home.
"I just found out about all this Friday, while I was in Kuwait. So it was a little bit of a surprise to me. I'm glad I got to surprise Jared and Madison," said Zehner.
Zehner serves in the 384th Military Police Battalion Army National Guard out of Fort Wayne. He just returned to the U.S. on leave from a tour in Afghanistan. He will be headed back in 2 weeks.
