FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- If you are out on the road this holiday season, know that there is someone out there watching that you are driving safely.

The Fort Wayne Police Department along with other police agencies through out northeast Indiana announced the statewide holiday traffic blitz Thursday morning.

It runs through December 1st. The focus of the blitz is safe family travel during Thanksgiving. Along with cracking down on drunk driving, police are also enforcing seatbelt and childseat safety.

Since the enforcement began a few weeks ago, sic drunk drivers have been arrested and 167 child restraint tickets have been issued in Fort Wayne alone.

"This is one of the busiest travel times in Indiana, and it is the goal of law enforcement in this area to keep travelers safe while driving on our highways and city streets," Lt. Tony Maze said.

"I encourage all drivers to protect themselves and their passengers by buckling up. It's the best way to protect yourself against injury in a crash," Lance Grubbs said.

You can help too, by calling 911 when you see suspicious activity. Tell dispatchers a description, location and which way a possible drunk driver is headed. This holiday blitz is one of four blitzes to happen every year.
