FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- Police responded to a home in the 600 block of Stratton Road in reference to a man making suicidal threats a little after 10 p.m. Sunday.

Preliminary information indicated the man was intoxicated and had access to firearms inside the home. Responding officers arrived on scene and were unable to make contact with him.

A Crisis Response Team negotiator established communication with the man and spoke with him briefly. He stopped communicating and refused to respond to the negotiators repeated attempts to restore communication.

In an attempt to motivate the man to exit the home peacefully, Emergency Services Team members deployed a chemical agent (tear gas) into the home. He failed to comply and refused to exit the home.

Emergency Services Team entered the home a little after 3 a.m. and took the man into custody. He was transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Stratton Road was closed to all traffic during the five hour-standoff. During a subsequent search, firearms were discovered inside the home. This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department.
