INTERNET (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – Millions of Twitter users had to find another form of communication Thursday afternoon as the social network’s service went down.

Twitter used to be infamous for these periodic outages and the appearance of the "fail whale" error page. But you won't find the "fail whale” this time. If you tried searching for Twitter in Google or Bing the internet simply couldn’t find it.

The Twitter company blog (on Tumblr) issued this statement:

“Users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue.”

The outage began around 11:50 a.m. EDT and it wasn’t until 1:40 p.m. that Twitter was able to report “Services are currently operational.”

No word yet on what caused the outage but with 175+ million registered users, it could have been an outage due to traffic on the servers.
