BLUFFTON, Ind. (21Alive) -- The family of Bluffton Athletic Director Steve Thompson released a statement indicating his condition has improved.

The family announced that Simpson is now in serious but stable condition after being critically injured in a freak accident over a week ago.

The incident happened August 7th when, according to witnesses, principal Steve Baker and Athletic Director Steve Thompson were engaging in horseplay in the school parking lot on August 7th, after a staff meeting at the middle school.

Police say Baker then got into his vehicle and drove up behind Thompson and honked his horn. Thompson then threw a bag on the hood of Baker's vehicle. Thompson went to retrieve the bag but Baker began to accelerate forward causing Thompson to fall backwards and hit his head on the pavement.

Thompson was transported to Lutheran Hospital where he had to undergo surgery.
