FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – Fort Wayne’s new Gang and Violent Crime Unit has been in the works for a long time.
We went to the intersection of Anthony and McKinnie to hear what residents thought about the new unit comprised of the former gang unit and former Neighborhood Response Team.
It's an area that's seen more than its share of shootings, robberies and homicides.
Chief Hamilton says the new unit will operate seven days a week, and will focus its attention when most crime is committed.
The unit will concentrate on the small number of people involved gangs and violent crime but who are responsible for the majority of the cases.
And people we talked to say it's a welcome change.
“I'm all for it, more power to them. It's good that's he's for it. It's a lot that he can do for Fort Wayne and I'm happy for him,” Wade Martin says.
“For them to crack down and try to nip it in the bud and hit it where it's at, where it's hard and home, they need to do something so we can all be safe, rather than scared and have to stay in our houses,” Amy Kilty says.
It's one thing to arrest someone, another to try a case.
As part of the new team deputies from the Allen County Prosecutor and U.S. Attorney's office will decide which court will try cases to make sure criminals face the maximum penalty for their crimes.
