COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (21Alive) – A controversial auditor in Whitley County has resigned amid a criminal investigation.

Jennifer McGuire, a Republican from Columbia City, submitted a letter of resignation to the Gov. Mike Pence, R-Ind., on Tuesday.

"Please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation from that office effective immediately," McGuire wrote Pence in the letter obtained by 21Alive.

In July, McGuire was placed on paid leave for what the Whitley County Prosecutor's Office called "alleged improprieties."

The prosecutor's office opened an investigation that is being handled by the Indiana State Police. No charges have been filed.

County officials have not elaborated on the reason for the investigation.

The Indiana State Board of Accounts is also investigating, according to Commissioner George Schrumpf, R-Whitley County.

21Alive contacted McGuire by phone Wednesday, but she declined comment.

Chief Deputy Vicky Schrader will serve as acting county auditor through a Republican caucus that will select a replacement.

Per state law, the caucus must be held within 30 days of the resignation. Additionally, a notice announcing the caucus must be made within 10 days of the vacancy.

Matt Boyd, Whitley County Republican Party Chairman, would not say when the caucus would take place, but said in a statement to 21Alive that a time and location would be announced "in the next few days."

Also complicating matters is that McGuire won the Republican primary in May, is unopposed in the general election in November and a July 15 deadline to withdraw her candidacy has passed.

McGuire will probably be re-elected, and would likely have to resign again, Boyd says.
