FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) Losing your identity is becoming easier as criminals use credit card scanners to rip your information.
It is a trend that is growing across the country. Criminals, focused on stealing credit card numbers, social security numbers, drivers license information and passport information, are buying the same the credit card scanners found at grocery stores and gas stations and using them against you.
They can be found on the web for $100, and using them to steal your identity requires little skill. By positioning one of these scanners in a purse, book bag, satchel or laptop case, a criminal has completed step one of two steps. The next step—bumping into your wallet or purse where your personal information is being stored. It takes little to no effort and the close proximity created from just a little bump between two people can lead to a ton of heartache down the road.
It seems that as technology has advanced, so have the ways in which a criminal is able take advantage of you.
You however have the ability to fight back my taking preventative measures to ensure that your information is kept safe.
First, contact your credit card company to put limits on purchases. If too many purchases are made, the creditors will contact you. If someone steals your information and racks up a bill that doesn’t coincide with your spending habits, creditors should contact you. Banking online is something most people do these days. Check your credit card statements weekly. They’re just a click away.
What about the credit cards and IDs themselves? Credit card sleeves can do the trick. They’re relatively cheap, very thin, will fit inside your wallet and ward off any attempted scan by deflecting the signal.
