Post Christmas Returns Not Causing Headaches

The day after Christmas is traditionally a day many return those unwanted gifts causing people to battle long lines at the return counter.

Store employees at Meijer on Lima Road described the traffic for returns as “steady.”

This season, store management says it doesn’t expect as many long lines as in year’s past, which is known for causing many headaches.

“I’m returning some ornaments that I had [received] for gifts,” said Fort Wayne resident Kim Henschen. “Someone else got me the same gift.”

Others were returning clothing for their children.

“It was just a hooded sweatshirt,” explained Tandy Embury of Columbia City. “[My son’s] stitching was coming undone. So, we just returned it.”

No matter the gift, shoppers are finding the process of returns and exchanges relatively painless at most stores including the Meijer on Lima Road.

“I got in [and] walked right up to the counter,” said Henschen. “It was wonderful. I thought I would have to wait for a long period. It was great.”

Store management says a combination of good holiday sales and short return lines is great for business. Experts say the popularity of gift cards is one of the main reasons for the good business
.
The plastic store credit made up 13 percent of holiday sales nation wide, and it’s all making for happy shoppers on the day after Christmas.

“There wasn’t a line,” said Meijer shopper Jamie Stayer. “ I was really surprised. I was expecting a lot more people to be exchanging gifts. It pretty much went pretty smooth.”

If you are thinking about returning items at any stores, be sure to read the return policy. The NRF says 11 percent of stores have tightened return policies and return windows can range from 15 days to 180 days.
