FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Third District Representative Mark Souder is voicing his opposition to what he calls a federal "takeover" of health care.
In a meeting with reporters Monday morning, Souder suggested that the current health care plan under consideration, would stifle competition and would eventually lead to a government-controlled insurance system.
"What we need is a reasonable modifcation of health care to cover those who are not covered, to cover pre-existing conditions and too take care of catastrophic costs," said Souder. "That does not require a government takeover."
A version of the plan brewing in Washington would set up a government run insurance plan as an alternative to private insurers, and would offer a solution to those without coverage.
Supporters say affordable alternatives are needed, and that the measure "fits the bill."
Opponents argue that the plan would encourage businesses to cancel their insurance programs for employees, forcing many into the government system.
A vote could come when lawmakers return from their August recess.
