WASHINGTON, DC (www.incnow.tv) - Following a contentious confirmation process, former U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., was approved Tuesday as Secretary of Defense.

Hagel was confirmed 58 to 41, amidst opposition from fellow Republicans on Hagel's perceived soft stance on Israel and Iranian nuclear development.

Republican senators filibustered a final tally for a week and a half before allowing a vote. Only four Republicans voted for their former colleague.

Hagel, 66, will be sworn into office Wednesday, replacing a retiring Leon Panetta.

Hagel takes over the Department of Defense as it faces billions of dollars in spending cuts in Friday's looming sequester.
