Indianapolis (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – The new statewide smoking ban took effect Friday and looks a lot like Indy's own smoking ordinance, but there’s one major exception: Indianapolis banned smoking in bars. This means the state's three largest cities -- Indy, Fort Wayne and Evansville are all smoke-free.
Now that the ban is in effect, South Bend is the largest city in Indiana which still allows smoking in bars.
Indy's old smoking ordinance allowed smoking in restaurants, as long as minors weren’t allowed in. However, the state’s new ordinance would have wiped out that issue.
_________
It's now illegal to smoke in most places in Indianapolis.
The city's stricter smoking ban took effect at 6 a.m. A group of small bar owners has filed a federal lawsuit to try to block the new law. They say the ban is unconstitutional because cigarettes are legal.
