Somalia (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Family and friends of Jessica Buchanan are celebrating, now that the 32-year-old aid worker is safe at a U.S. Naval Air Force base in Italy.
SEAL Team Six, who famously took out Osama bin Laden, engineered the daring rescue of Buchanan, who had been held hostage for months.
Buchanan was kidnapped in October along with fellow aid worker 60-year-old Poul Thisten.
Government officials made a decision that Buchanan was in distress, physically and mentally, and they thought they had the best opportunity to effect a rescue.
SEAL Team 6, the same U.S. Navy SEAL unit that killed Osama bin Laden parachuted into Somalia overnight to rescue two aid workers.
They were targeting the compound where 32-year-old American Jessica Buchanan and Danish companion Poul Thisted had been held since October.
The SEAL team exchanged gunfire with Pirates as they approached the compound but made their way inside where they found the prisoners alive.
The hostages were then placed on U.S. helicopters and then flown to an American base in Jabouti.
The President gave the “go ahead” for the extraction because of health concerns of the hostages.
The highly classified operation ended just before the President gave his State of the Union address Wednesday night.
Minutes after the address, the President phoned Jessica's father to tell him his daughter was safe.
