FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) -- Three-hundred Tea Party members rallied in Fort Wayne Sunday to welcome the Tea Party Express tour.
The Tea Party Express is a national bus tour of entertainers and inspirational speakers, traveling through seven states. Organizers say the purpose of the tour is to educate people about the constitution—something Emery McClendon, Fort Wayne Tea Party Organizer, says schools are no longer doing.
“We’re teaching our young kids what it means to be an American, where our foundational roots are and how this country came to be,” McClendon said. “Schools today don’t teach all of these things anymore, so we’re trying to get this into the minds of our constituents, the people in this community and around the country.”
The theme of the 2012 Express tour is “Restoring the American Dream.” McClendon says to him, it means freeing Americans from the government reigns.
“Limited government, bringing America back to its foundational roots, as far as stopping the taxes, high taxes, excessive taxes. Just like in the days of the Tea Party movement back in the 1700s, they didn't want all the excessive taxes. They didn't want government infringing upon their rights.”
One of the many speakers at the rally was Indiana State Treasurer, Richard Mourdock. Mourdock is running against Republican incumbent Senator, Richard Lugar, in the 2012 Indiana Primary.
Mourdock says if he wins the Senate seat in November, his main focus will be the economy, and doing his part to help balance the national budget, and eliminate national debt.
“My budget plan that I put forward last year calls for, beginning by eliminating four agencies: the Department of Education, Department of Energy, Department of Commerce, and Housing and Urban Development. Frankly, I see that as a starting point. We have got to live within our means,” Mourdock said.
Mourdock says his other ideas to boost the economy include getting rid of regulations that limit small businesses, and changing the tax code.
The Tea Party Express tour will make it's final stop in Texas the day before the May 8 Primary.
