WASHINGTON (AP) - Indiana Senator Richard Lugar wants subsidies
removed from a new five-year farm bill. But he'll wait until the legislation reaches the Senate floor in the hope that he finds more support there than in committee.
Lugar says the 21-member Agriculture Committee mostly consists
of lawmakers who favor continuing subsidies, but the full, 100-member Senate might be more receptive to his view.
Lugar and New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg have introduced
rival legislation to the farm bill.
Under Lugar's approach, all farmers would receive government-paid insurance. If the farmer's county was hit by drought, floods or low prices, farmers would be paid 85% of the expected revenue or 80% of the farm's five-year average adjusted gross income.
