Dems, GOP Asked to Select New Date for Election to Replace Carson

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Gov. Daniels' office wants state Democratic and Republican leaders to select another date for a special election to choose Rep. Julia Carson's successor.

Under state law, the election must come at least 50 days after the parties choose their nominees to succeed Carson, a six-term Democrat who died Dec. 15.

A March 1st election date proposed today by Democrats and Republicans would come only 48 days after Republicans hold their
nominating caucus on Jan. 13.

State Democratic Party Chairman Dan Parker says he and state GOP
Chairman Murray Clark are in discussions to select another date.

He said the earliest possible date for the special election would be Monday, March 3, although that date is not under discussion.
