FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry says he has no plans to pay part of the costs to remove hazardous asbestos from the City-County Building during a pending renovation.
The county is refurbishing the government building to house city and county police departments. While other government offices move to 200 east Berry Street.
The work will require going above ceilings in many cases, disturbing asbestos in insulation and in wall-panels.
The work will be more costly than first thought.
Allen County Commissioner Nelson Peters says, “It's become a lot bigger deal that we originally anticipated. So we may have to cut back on some of what we're actually going to do in this building. So we can afford what it is we need to do with respect to eliminating the asbestos."
Henry's office says a co-location task force agreed that the city would be responsible for renovations at 200 east Berry, while the county would pick up the tab for upgrades to the City-County Building, and the city is standing by that agreement.
