WASHINGTON DC (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Two former Arlington National Cemetery officials faced criticism and tough questions Thursday about unmarked and mislabeled graves at the military burial ground.
Irate senators grilled the two men who used to run the Arlington Cemetery, after a scandal involving hundreds of mismarked graves erupted last month.
Cemetery officials estimated that 211 graves were misidentified, mismarked or mis-located at the historic cemetery in June. But it is now feared that the problem could be much, much worse.
Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill says, “At a conservative estimate, 4900- 6600 graves may be unmarked, improperly marked, or mislabeled on the cemetery's maps. We owe our veterans much better.
The former superintendent and his deputy who testified before the committee were forced to retire after the problem was discovered.
