FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Indiana's senior U.S. Senator says the President's new plan on Iraq may not be able to hit the target.
Republican Richard Lugar visited Fort Wayne Wednesday, stopping at the Apple Glen Wal-Mart mid-afternoon to promote a food drive for Hoosiers.
President Obama told the nation Tuesday night that Operation Iraqi Freedom is over, and that U.S. troops remaining in that country will now focus on assisting the launch of Iraq’s new government.
But Lugar says that's a tall task since Iraq still doesn't have a prime minister.
Senator Lugar says, “For the moment they don't have a parliament that's meeting. They don't have an oil law with the Curds in the north that gives them the revenue for their treasury, and there were 13 different attacks in provinces last week, which Iraqis were killed by terrorists."
Lugar says the President and Congress need to do a better job of establishing long-term objectives for Iraq before making leaders there govern before they're ready.
