COLUMBUS, Ohio (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - The Heartbeat Bill is a measure being considered in the Ohio Statehouse that is surrounded by controversy.
The measure would ban abortions after a fetus' first heartbeat can be medically detected.
To prove their point, supporters of the bill had two pregnant women give ultrasounds on the first day of testimony at a Statehouse committee meeting Wednesday morning. The testimony came before the Ohio House Health and Aging Committee.
State Rep. Lynn Wachtmann (R) 75th District and the pro-life group Faith2Action teamed up to have the fetuses testify. The fetuses were nine-weeks-old.
Wachtmann told Indiana’s NewsCenter that the fetus’ testimonies were powerful. He said, “One couldn't help but realize there is a life there, and it really, I think gets down to the crux of the debate. Do you support a woman being able to take that life or not?”
When asked about the constitutionality of his bill Wachtmann says there could be some hoops to jump through. Democrat lawmakers have already called the anti-abortion bill unconstitutional.
