When applying for jobs, be careful who you list as a reference.
According to a recently released study from CareerBuilder, three in five employers say when contacting references about a potential employee, the references did not have positive things to say.
Also, nearly 30 percent of employers have caught a fake reference on a candidate's application.
"You want to make sure you are including your biggest cheerleaders among your job references," said Rosemary Haefner, Vice President of Human Resources at CareerBuilder. "Before choosing someone, ask yourself 'Did this person understand my full scope of responsibilities? Can he or she vouch for my skills, accomplishments, and work ethic?'"
Haefner also suggests making sure you let potential references know you are going to list them in your applications. If someone is unwilling, she said, it helps to avoid an awkward or damaging interaction with an employer of interest.
