All Clear Given: Man With Gun Seen On IUPUI Campus

March 19, 2013 Updated Nov 12, 2013 at 12:19 AM EDT

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- The IUPUI campus is now "all clear" after being on lock down after reports of a man with a gun on campus from approximately 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.

"IUPUI Alert! Man with long gun seen in lot at Barnhill and Vermont. Seek shelter," a text alert from the school read just before 1 p.m.

IUPUI police told our affiliate station in Indianapolis, RTV-6, that a student was walking to her car in a parking lot near the dental school and said she saw a white male in a long, brown coat possibly carrying a rifle or shotgun.

The alleged gunman was standing by a green or gray sedan at the time, but the student ducked down and did not see where he headed.

The parking lot has been cleared and police are searching nearby areas and buildings.

Professor Trevor Potts told RTV6 on the phone that the mood was tense on campus.

"Everyone's doing a very good job of staying calm and staying inside," he said. "I think this speaks to those who would argue for guns on campus, I think this is a rationale for why this is not a good idea, myself."

Student Charlie Elliott described the scene to RTV6 via Twitter.

"We were in the nursing building, which is pretty close to Barnhill and Vermont … They've just moved us into an 'interior room' inside the hospital," he wrote. "It's us and about 4 other classes all jammed in this room, the anxiety is beginning to grow. Police were well armed and we are locked in this room."

IU Health University Hospital, Riley Hospital for children and Crispus Attucks High School are all also on lock down.
