FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - Former PGA Tour players and tour hopefuls will soon flood into Fort Wayne. Sycamore Hills Golf Club is hosting its first official PGA event from Aug. 26 through Sept. 1.
The Hotel Fitness Championship is an event that will help 50 players qualify for tour cards, and get their chance to face off against players like Tiger Woods, Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson on the PGA tour.
This is the first time the PGA has used this method to select who gets a tour card. It will be followed by three other events, and the Top 50 players will be granted tour cards.
Every year, the Top 125 players on the PGA Tour are eligible to play on the tour again the following year. But those who fell below that mark this year, and the top players from the Web.com Tour have been invited to face off in this competition.
"It will be interesting to see how it plays out over the course of four events. Somebody asked me the other day if I had to pick our tournament champion right now from the Web.com Tour or the PGA Tour, I said I think our tournament champion will be from the Web.com Tour" said Duke Butler IV Hotel Fitness Championship tournament director.
This is an event that will draw national attention to the Summit City.
"The spotlight is really going to be on Fort Wayne for a full week, the last week of August. And with the tournament being televised on The Golf Channel for eight hours over the course of four days, Thursday through Sunday, we have two hours each day of live broadcast. It's just a great way to showcase Fort Wayne, showcase Sycamore Hills and show everybody how great northeast Indiana and Fort Wayne really is," said Butler.
Thousands are expected to attend the Hotel Fitness Championship bringing an economic boost to the area. This also can be key in helping Sycamore Hills secure larger PGA events in the future.
