Mississippi (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Picture this you are driving in the middle of the night, you look in your rear view mirror only to see what appears to be a police officer with flashing lights.
Your instincts would tell you to pull over but should you?
Two people in Mississippi did just that only to find out that the person pulling them over was not an officer but someone selecting drivers at random and killing them.
A massive man hunt is underway now looking for the gunman but police have few clues.
Something like that could easily happen here, so Indiana's NewsCenter spoke with the Allen County Sheriff's Department to find how you can protect yourself from imposters.
Allen County Sheriffs say officers can only pull you over if they're in a fully marked vehicle but if they're not, they say officers are required to wear their uniforms.
If you're unsure about who is pulling you over, the department says you can keep driving, but turn on your emergency flashers to signal the officer.
They suggest driving to a well lit place, like a gas station or conveniece store, where a lot of people are around.
If you're still uncomfortable, they say you can always call 911 to verify.
