Staying Connected While on Vacation

UNDATED (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - There's still plenty of time left to take a vacation this summer and plenty of opportunity to truly get away from it all, including getting away from all your gadgets.

Our inability to turn them off is beyond dispute. Our addiction to them is well documented and research implies we even suffer separation anxiety when we're away from our laptops, smartphones or tablets for too long.

But on vacation shouldn't we at least be willing to disconnect?

Jeannene Tornatore at Orbitz says that if you can’t truly disconnect what better time to wean yourself off all things Wi-Fi than on vacation.

But if you don't know how to disconnect anymore her advice is to just leave the device at home, let your work-world know you're away, then select a destination far away.

Tornatore says, “Islands in the Caribbean where you might not get cell service or Wi-Fi you’ll be forced to be a little bit more disconnected."

But if you insist on taking it, set aside only a half-an-hour or so per day to re-connect.

Tornatore says you can then, “come back to your hotel, check your voicemail, your email, get online and respond to emails but limit yourself to that timeframe."

She says a tech-free vacation could actually make you feel more rejuvenated when you return.
