Sen. Lugar: Bi-Partisan Group Should Help Craft New Iraq Diplomacy Strategy

By Peter Ambrose

Indiana republican Senator Richard Lugar says a bi-partisan group of lawmakers should work with President Bush on scaling back the military in Iraq.

Last week, Lugar said the current war strategy is not working and U.S. officials should start considering withdrawing troops from Iraq. Lugar believes the U.S. should focus more on diplmacy. But he also says a smaller military force should remain in Iraq to help solidify the diplomatic effort.

Though Lugar has called for troop withdrawls, he opposes Democrat attempts to set a deadline for a pullout.
