4th of July Goes Off Without a Hitch

By Peter Ambrose

(Fort Wayne) - Though rain moved through northeast Indiana Wednesday night, it dissipated before reaching Fort Wayne, leaving the city relatively dry for the annual July 4th fireworks celebrations at IPFW. The show capped off a day of family-friendly holiday activities at the campus.

All day long, the city was filled with the sounds of fireworks and firecrackers being set off from yards along neighborhood streets. No major problems stemming from fireworks have been reported, though there were some noise complaints after midnight.

But fireworks weren't the only way to celebrate the 4th. There were barbecues and parties. About 100 people, decked out in red, white and blue, walked and rode down Old Mill Road for the annual Woodhurst Bicycle parade. Bells also rang out at Heritage Park off Hobson road to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the 13 original American colonies.

Across the country, cities and communities used elaborate fireworks displays to cap off the holiday. New York city billed its show as the largest in the nation. An estimated 3-Million onlookers braved the rain with umbrellas and ponchos to watch the 30 minute specatcle over the East River. About 40,000 fireworks were shot off. Some of them were aimed down and detonated on the river's surface, creating a sparkling illusion.
