Souder Wants Embattled Senator Out of Office

By Peter Ambrose

(Washington DC) - Northeast Indiana congressman Mark Souder is among the growing number of Congressional Republicans calling for Idaho Senator Larry Craig to step down.

Craig has lost support from his fellow Republicans this week since news broke that he recently pleaded guilty to a disorderly conduct charge. That plea stems from a case in which Craig was arrested in airport bathroom in Minneapolis in June. The undercover officer who arrested Craig accuses the 62 year old of trying to solicit sex.

Craig has since denied any wrongdoing and has said he agreed to a plea to make the case go away.

But that's not good enough for some. In a statement Wednesday, Congressman Souder said Craig's plea demonstrates he is unfit to serve in Congress.

Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Norm Coleman of Minnesota also urged Craig to step down, as has Rep. Jeff Miller of Florida and others. ''My opinion is that when you plead guilty to a crime, you shouldn't serve. That's not a moral stand. That's not a holier-than-thou. It's just a factual situation," McCain said.

Senate Republican leaders have requested an Ethics Committee investigation into Craig's arrest.

Craig has agreed to temporarily give up his leadership posts on important committees. They include the Veterans Affairs Committee on which he was the senior Republican.

Craig's term in office ends next year. He has not said whether he will regin or whether he will seek re-election.
