Bayh Backs Clinton in '08

WASHINGTON (AP) - Indiana Senator Evan Bayh has endorsed Hillary
Clinton for president.

Bayh says she has the experience to lead the country and is tough on national security. The Indiana Democrat is considered a possible candidate for vice president next year.

A colleague of Clinton's on the Senate Armed Services Committee,
Bayh was considering a run for president himself until late last year when he dropped out of the race. Now he's a national co-chairman of Clinton's campaign.

They traveled together to Iraq in January, just before Clinton announced she would seek the Democratic nomination.

Bayh says his endorsement has nothing to do with a possible vice
presidential run. When asked whether he would accept the nomination, he said he probably wouldn't turn it down, but it wasn't the reason he endorsed her.

Bayh also was considered as a running mate by Al Gore in 2000.
He said he endorsed Clinton now because it's the right time in her
campaign.
