FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - A new school year means another year of the Focus On Health series in Northeast Indiana.
Focus On Health is an organization that travels to area schools to spread the message to students about living healthier lives.
"We're hoping that they learn, and they share, and they teach," Marita Marquardt, RN, director of Focus On Health says. "We're hoping that they take their learning and their knowledge back to their parents, who may know it, but don't know they're interested in making better choices. So we're hoping that they learn, and they share, and they teach."
The group visited Jefferson Middle School on Monday; and hundreds of students had their blood pressure taken and were given a mini eye exam.
The Patriots also learned about the dangers of tobacco and alcohol.
"It really opened up my eyes to how bad smoking is," 8th grader Sarah Donovan says. "The dead lung was all covered in like black stuff and I don't want that inside me."
"We had to like walk on a line, and when we walked on the line like we couldn't see because the goggles were blurry," 7th grader Angelo Pearson says.
