HOLLYWOOD (21Alive) – Sad news out of Hollywood, the actor Peter O'Toole has died.

O’Toole’s family announced Sunday that the 81-year-old, passed away Saturday peacefully in the hospital and that he'd been ill for some time.

It was the movie, “Lawrence of Arabia” that made Peter O'Toole an international superstar.

O'Toole was the son of an Irish bookie and a Scottish nurse, and carried the reputation as a hard drinking ladies man.

O’Toole was nominated eight times for an academy award, and although he never won the golden statue, he was given an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement which smoothed any hurt feelings.

Acting, he once said, is what he was put on this earth to do.
