GULF OF MEXICO, (Indiana’s NewsCenter) -- BP officials are asking regulators for permission to resume drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

The petition comes less than a year after the devastating rig explosion that killed 11 workers and caused a massive oil spill in the Gulf.

The request creates a delicate situation for the Obama administration as it seeks to balance safety concerns with a desire to increase domestic oil production.

The Justice Department confirmed it is considering numerous criminal and civil penalties against BP.

The company has set aside $40 billion to cover costs related to the spill.

No word yet when they will get a response to the request.
