NEW HAVEN, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - With the warmer weather more motorcycles are on the road and there have already been many motorcycle accidents this year.

Friday the general manager of a local motorcycle shop talked to Indiana's NewsCenter about what riders need to stay safe.

"The most important single piece of equipment you can wear is a helmet," said Don Ehlerding, River City Harley Davidson.

Ehlerding says helmets are vital to keeping riders safe, and so is the right clothing.

"Leather is another layer of protection and it's much stronger than your skin," said Ehlerding. "You know, we drive a car, we wear a seatbelt, if your going to ride a motorcycle, then wear the appropriate gear.”

Ehlerding says the leather gear, boots and helmets really can save lives.

"We hope it never happens, but if it does, be prepared," said Ehlerding.

There are also motorcycle safety classes riders can take through the state of Indiana.

Ehlerding also hosts workshops at his store in New Haven. The next one is focused on teaching women about bikes and bike safety. That is being held at 10:30 am Saturday May 5.
