FORT WAYNE, Ind. – (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Bowling is a sport you often wouldn't think the blind could take part in, but in Fort Wayne it's something they've been doing for more than 50 years.

"Some of them are very competitive and it's amazing what these individuals can do," said Billy Jones, President, Anthony Wayne Lions Club.

Close to 20 bowlers every week to bowl with the blind bowling league. Local Lions Clubs help the group by being there to spot the bowlers. That along with guide rails is what makes it possible for them to bowl.

"Without that you just wouldn't be able to get straight and you would probably throw a gutter ball every time," said Kristy Anderson, Indiana Association Workers For The Blind Fort Wayne.

While this group enjoys the bowling, the best part for many is simply having a night out.

"It's just a way to get out, and I don't know, be part of things," said Anderson.

"Getting involved in the bowling really helped show me that I could really live life and have fun and I have value," said Julie Collins, Blind Bowler.

One of the hardest things for the blind is finding transportation so the Lions Club also helps out by driving them to the bowling alley. The league meets every Tuesday night at Thunder Bowl in Fort Wayne.
