FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21ALIVE) --- Dupont Road in north Fort Wayne will be in line for another makeover, on top of improvements slated to take place near Interstate 69.

Dupont between Coldwater and Lima Roads is going to be widened and generally spruced up, to enhance traffic flow and safety for pedestrians.

Traffic counts on the stretch of road have skyrocketed the past 20 years, with new housing and business development in that area.

So, plans call for expanding the road from two lanes to four lanes, with groundbreaking figuring to take place sometime in 2016.

In addition to more lanes, sidewalks will be added on the north side of the road, while a walking trail is in the drawings on the south side.

The trail at one point will actually tunnel under Dupont.

We wanted to know why the work couldn't get started earlier.
“There’s a lot of environmental studies and issues that you have to do, so it takes time, plus to acquire the number of parcels that are going to be needed in this stretch of road, it's going to take a lot of time to work through those negotiations and get that accomplished," said Frank Suarez, a spokesperson for the Fort Wayne Public Works Department.

A landscaped median is part of the project, near some of the housing subdivisions closer to Lima Road on the west end of the construction.

The median, with grass and trees, is designed to fit with the housing theme, and to keep cars and trucks from turning into those subdivisions simply for the purpose of looping back onto Dupont Road.

We couldn't get an answer on the cost of the project, but we do know the federal government will pick up 80 percent of the tab.
