AVILLA, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – an Avilla man is being charged Wednesday for shooting at an East Noble school bus full of children.

Andrew Martin Thiel, 21, of Avilla is charged with criminal mischief, a Class A Misdemeanor, for damaging property. Avilla Police say he’s being held in a secure facility without bond.

Theil is accused of shooting an East Noble School bus Tuesday afternoon as it was leaving a stop in Cranberry Acres neighborhood. No one was injured, but police say two windows were cracked.

East Noble School Corporation sent another bus to pick up the remaining children and drop them off. Police say they found a B.B. gun in a home by the bus stop, and say that was used in the shooting.

A similar incident happened in Kendallville this past December, where two school buses were shot with a pellet gun shattering windows. No one was injured in that incident either.

Since the shootings, Avilla Police Chief Glen Wills says the department has taken extra precautions.

“This morning we had extra officers come in and work our bus areas, where they're making pick-ups and drop-offs. This afternoon we had additional officers come in. So we're taking the situation very seriously and we'd like to deter anyone from trying anything like that. They will be punished to the severest extent of the law,” said Chief Wills.

Police say Theil is not connected to the bus shooting incident in December, and they have no information on a previous criminal record.

Police say they'll pick up Thiel from the secure facility in 72 hours or less and transport him to jail where he'll wait for his day in court.
