Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - The Edy's ice cream factory turns 25 this year keeping hundreds employed in Fort Wayne through some tough economic times.

"It's been a great milestone to hit," said Sheila Brojek, Plant Manager.

Edy's started in 1987 with 18 employees. They've since grown to more than 500 workers and 100 of those were added in the last year.

"We're pretty excited that we have the opportunity to continue to grow," said Brojeck.

Some Edy's employees have seen production grow from two million gallons of ice cream a year to more than 40 million.

"You had to know when you pushed this button what it was going to do, a lot more button pushing. Now the technology has improved so much that it's kind of like starting your car, you turn over the key and it starts," said Sue Lichgtenberger, employee, 20 years.

Edy's has been expanding. They’ve added jobs and space during an economic downturn. Their plant manager credits it to there never really being a decrease in demand for ice cream.

"Ice cream is a comfort food. People like to eat ice cream especially when times are tough. Sitting down at the end of a night with their family and children and having a bowl of ice cream is something that never really stops. So from a demand standpoint, no we have not really suffered," said Brojek.

Sue is a quality assurance supervisor at the plant. She has worked there for two decades and says she still loves what she does.

"It's fun. What we do is fun. It makes people smile and that's the part of my job I love the best. We make people smile," said Lichgtenberger.

The Fort Wayne plant is one of two making Edy’s ice cream for consumers in the eastern section of the United States.
