FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Wednesday the state laid out new rules for outdoor stages. It's all in response to the deadly stage collapse at the state fairgrounds last August. Organizers of Fort Wayne's Three Rivers Festival say it means changes for them this year.
The new rules passed by the state's Fire and Building Safety Commission call for festival's like Three Rivers to have their stages inspected, have emergency plans in place and to have any equipment that isn't attached to the stage also inspected.
The director of the Three Rivers Festival says they had already been complying with many of the state's new requests. But they will still have more inspection now. They aren't sure how many inspections because it is still unclear to them exactly what equipment will need to be inspected. Still, Jack Hammer says these changes were needed.
"The big thing here is that the control is there and we don't have those shabby type stages out there that could cause problems. We're glad that the control is there. This first year is just going to take a little bit of time, on both of our parts, to make sure we're doing exactly what they need us to do," said Jack Hammer, Director, Three Rivers Festival.
Hammer says the stage inspections could mean they'll have to have their stage up sooner. He says that will cost them more money. But Hammer says that extra cost would vary greatly depending on how many days early their stage will have to be up.
