FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21 Alive) – For some babies, it's the difference between life and death. This week many groups are working to spread awareness about the benefits of breast feeding.

Breast milk has antibodies that babies need. For premature babies, living their first months in intensive care, it can be the key to their survival. The thing is their mothers sometimes aren't able to provide breast milk.

That why five years ago, Lutheran Hospital became the state's first milk depot. They collect extra milk from mothers and get it to babies in need.

This is something that is done all year, but this week is recognized as “World Breastfeeding Week,” so it's a time for them to highlight what they do year round.

Since 2008, Lutheran's Milk Depot has collected more than 40,000 ounces. For the babies who benefited from this, it's truly a celebration.

“We did just have our NICU family reunion. A lot of babies that were born here at Lutheran came back and celebrated all together and we do give credit for breast milk for helping a lot of those babies survive,” said Michelle DeArmond, a Registered Nurse at Lutheran Hospital.

Mothers can help by donating their breast milk and calling Lutheran Children’s Hospital’s Milk Dept at (260) 435-7330.
