FORT WAYNE, Ind, (21Alive) - Before teeing off for the Hotel Fitness Championship several pros and amateurs hit the links Wednesday to raise money for The Evans Scholars Foundation.
The Chick Evans Memorial Pro-Am is a long standing tradition for the Western Golf Association, and was incorporated into the Hotel Fitness Championship this year at Sycamore Hills Golf Club.
Before the pro-am a current Evans Scholar spoke to the donors who played in the event, and shared his story. 21-year-old Tony Svarczkopf is a graduate of Bishop Dwenger and is currently a senior at Indiana University.
The Fort Wayne course is very familiar to Anthony. He caddied at Sycamore Hills during high school to earn extra cash, and his hard work on and off the course is what landed him a full ride scholarship to IU as an Evans scholar.
"I mean I teared up. It was just a rush," said Anthony Svarczkopf, Indiana University Evans Scholars Chapter President.
It was the winter of his senior year of high school when Anthony found out he'd been selected for the scholarship. He says the experience changed his life.
"Without the scholarship, college for me, I wouldn't be in Bloomington. I couldn't picture life without the scholarship right now," said Svarczkopf.
Being given the chance to be an Evans Scholar allowed Anthony to pursue his dream of going to IU. It was an experience that began on the course, but Anthony says what he's taken away are truly life lessons.
"It really teaches you patience, respect, and a lot of great things that you'll carry with you all throughout life," said Svarczkopf.
The Evans Scholars Foundation was founded by famed golfer Chick Evans in 1929. Now the program puts more than 800 students through college each year by awarding scholarships to deserving caddies.
As a senior at IU Anthony is anxiously awaiting to start his post-education life by pursuing a career in medical sales.
"Looking back on it now, it's going to be one of the most cherished times for sure," said Svarczkopf.
