ASHLEY, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – A Steuben County man is dead after crashing his motorcycle during a police chase near Ashley.

According to Ashley police, 34-year-old Howard Squier ignored an officer’s command to pull over for an alleged traffic violation around 12:55 a.m. Wednesday. Police say Squier led them on a chase that began on North Grand Avenue in Ashley, which turns into County Road 400 West in Steuben County.

Police say Squier, on his 2000 Honda motorcycle, turned west on County Road 700 South where the chase continued. After breaking away from the chase, police say they found Squier’s body about 200 feet from the intersection of County Road 700 South and County Road 800 West. His motorcycle was found on the opposite side of the road, about 100 feet from the intersection.

The Steuben County coroner pronounced Squier dead at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet.

When Indiana’s NewsCenter arrived at the scene, they found Squier’s parents, children and other family members very upset, asking how the events of Squier’s death could have transpired. Squier’s father, John, and other family members, say they want answers about police protocol over high speed pursuits.

Indiana’s NewsCenter placed multiple calls to the Ashley Police Department who said that they would be available upon the completion of the investigation.

Indiana's NewsCenter will update this story as updates become available.
